a Merry Xmas

...where did Coco get her idea for a logo from I wonder?...

BE CREATIVE:
...and how, with a little time and elbow grease, you can transform some old metal into wonderful Xmas presents:

If, like me, you have a bucket somewhere, full of old and recovered, pulled and rusting shoes, and though you'd never want them back on your horse, you just can't bear to part with them, look no further than a Xmas present solution.

NOTE: Steve has plundered this 'pot' a few times looking for a quick-fix so Henry can have shoes on both feet in an emergency, so having some available is a good idea, so? don't use all the 'best' shoes for this gift soloution.

The idea began when a friend Gorgeous Paul (yes, the same GP who designed the Tom&Henry tops for M&S, and author of Opulent Scrawls: 'how to live life gorgeously'), asked me for one of Tom & Henry's shoes...it got me thinking...because GP wouldn't want an old rusty shoe, with bent nails still in it and caked in Essex mud would he?  definitely not!

Then I asked myself, what could I do to the shoes to make them nice enough for GP to allow them in his abode?

Paint them. So here we go:

First, de-nail the old shoes with pliers, you can knock them from underneath and unless the shoes are very rusty, they should loosen and pop out easily, alternatively have your farrier do it. If, like this single shoe here, they are in there for good, just twist the nails off at the surface (they are quite soft), and grind them flat.

Then get a stiff wire brush and clean the loose surface of decay, mud and rust off, out of the grooves and nail holes, the better you do this job, the better the surface of the finished product will be, and for Paul, it'd have to be perfect.

Then, once they're clean, using a little wire, make a hook, thread it through a nail hole, and hang the shoes up, where they will eventually stay to dry.

Spray a fine coat as instructed on the can, of primer suitable for cars. 2 coats will be fine, allow plenty of time to dry between coats, do it in a well ventilated area, preferably outside.

IMPORTANT SAFETY TIP FROM JOHN:
Wear a mask too, you dont want paint in your lungs, true story.

Once the base coat is dry, spray your chosen top colour onto the shoes, remember these gifts are likely to be kept indoors, so do a neat job.

The sky is the limit since car spray comes in lots of colours, fluorescent and metallic too! Here Lemmy is 'helping' making sure I do a neat job.

I made a 'washing line' in my yard, and hung them there, outdoors, so very well ventilated. wear something old and gloves are a good idea too.

I used metallic colours for mine, since it's so 'on-trend' for this season: gold, silver and bronze.  Plus I did a neon orange one too for fun...looks great too!

Add a top coat of lacquer if necessary, 'bobs your uncle', recycle, reuse and redecorate, everyone will love them!

If you're feeling very creative you can even over-paint them with a design or someones name, or use a metallic pen if a paintbrush is too tricky, you can get them in any art shop. Thread a ribbon through a nail hole for hanging too.

Once dry, I will wrap them in tissue, and tie it off with a ribbon.

Tuesday's blog will have an update, and there'll be photos to show you how they turned out, I promise you a treat, and a guest appearance too.

Merry Holidays Everyone, safe riding.

TCJpart90 Painting & Fashion

RACHEL WILLIAMS DESIGN
I had a birthday card which had been designed by and artist Rachel Williams (a friend of Jess, our Junior Designer).

It was the head of an Arab horse and I asked her to paint Tom & Henry.

I chose my favourite photo of the boys taken by John C Brown.  You will of course recognise the picture...and later on I'll let you in on a sneak preview of what else this photo got used for...

Rachel involved me in every step of the way and even painted another to exhibit as part of her degree show.

Here are a few of the sketches and working drawings, some of the final draft paintings and a final mounted piece hanging on our living room wall.

M&S WOMAN:

...and this photo is my screen saver at work and here's a sneak preview of the Tom & Henry tops for Autumn12 M&SWoman:

'Top' secret...xxx

...keep your eyes peeled, on-line is easiest, but be quick, I'll be buying most of them for my friends and family!!

This, of course, is the iconic photo John took just after they'd had their freeze-marks done. The Designer responsible for these great wardrobe essentials was none other than Gorgeous Paul Charles of Opulent Scrawls blog fame, (he sits next door but one to me), thank you GP.

TJCpart63 June issue:

IT'S FASHION DARLING...
Skinny and gorgeous, a supermodels' life is full of fabulous opportunity and excitement.

This piece has been written for the next issue of Trakehners UK Magazine a 4 times a year publication.

As you can see from the June cover of 'Vague' magazine, horses are the newest fashion iconography.  It wont have escaped your attention that imagery of equines are appearing on fashion items from handbags to jewellery and womenswear....and this is the story of how two 'ordinary' boys from Biggleswade have made it into high fashion.

Check inside this new issue too:

...born with star quality, Tom & Henry have been on a detox since January.  Their bodies are temples of sveltness and they are glossy with health.

They are sleeping well, eating healthily: Tom & Henry are both strict vegetarians, having regular cardio-vascular work-outs around their field...a personal trainer is so last season.

It is no coincidence then that they were selected at a casting out of all the horses in the world to become icons of fashion for M&S in the form of front print t'shirts.

The models themselves T&H, who don't get out of bed for less than a bowl of dinner with carrots julienne, expertly chopped by their personal assistant (me), remain very down-to-earth...well they do like to roll!

Fame has yet to take it's toll on them.

So cowgirls...listen to what happened next.

Naturally, as I work in a design room I was able to provide the teams with the perfect subjects for these tops, namely the most gorgeous and charismatic Trakeners of them all...Tom & Henry!!

Images were poured over by the teams and a few made the cut...this was a very nervy time for me I can tell you, I'd have to be the one to break the news to the boys themselves if they'd been unsuccessful in their attempt to go from 'pets' to superstars.

Luckily the creative teams found just the images they were looking for on this blog, and the T&H images were put into work to become a permanent part of M&S fashion.

The first top to appear is the 'Tom' top for Indigo Collection, modelled here next to Tom himself by his PA (me), a modern style for every summer wardrobe and easier to look after than a real horse!

Tom & Henry are trying to keep things 'real', they don't want fame to change them, they just want to be treated like....I was going to say normal horses...but they have never been treated like normal horses...because they are not normal..they are T&H!  They have breakfast in bed some mornings when they're just too famous to get up on their feet to eat which my neighbours find hilarious.  I just slide their bowls under their noses and they eat lying down.

Tom & Henry may be the first Trakehners to make the transition from dressage potentials to fashion models, but they'll never forget where they came from though:  New york, London, Milan, Paris and Biggleswade!

little note...just before you go straight off to the newsagent to try to buy 'Vague' magazine...it's an amusing invention of my own..sorry to disappoint!

TCJpart57 it's Fashion Darling

THE 'TOM TOP':
You guessed it....I have famous as well as super-gorgeous horses....

HORSE IMAGERY is so on-trend:  and this is the story of how Tom&Henry are about to become icons of fashion. ..well that was bound to happen wasn't it?

It won't have escaped your notice how horses are appearing on fashion items everywhere from dresses and tops, knitwear and jewellery, and metalware in the shapes of stirrups and bits on handbags too.  High street to designer brands, the imagery of equines is everywhere.

Naturally as a horse owner working in a fashion design studio in London, I was ever so slightly influential to the team around me as to the actual horses that were used for these trends at my place of work, Marks and Spencer...namely Tom & Henry.

...well, where else would they find such stunning images of horses?

If you are a regular visitor to my blog you will recognise their images immediately.

Tom & Henry appear on t’shirts and loop-back tops throughout the season, and I will add photos as they become available in-store.

The first piece to appear was the 'Tom Top', a Spring12 Indigo Collection for M&S.

...you can just about see the old bungalow next door in the background!

...and here he is, the real thing Mr Tom, totally unchanged by his fame, he has decided he just wants to lead a normal life and be treated like a regular horse,  he will sign photos though! ...

When the next top comes out in Autumn12 it will have both of them on it, I wonder if Henry will take being a fashion icon quite so humbly?

Who would have thought owning horses would take such interesting turns?

Tom appears totally unphased by his fame...but I do have to adore him a little more...that's not hard!

He has breakfast in bed some mornings when he's just too famous to get up, I have to put his bowl under his nose while he eats lying down....

..and finishes it lying down...then I clear away...

...and he's stretching and lying out flat!!!
Those boys!

I have bought these for all my friends and my Mum has one too!!!

Such handsome chaps those horses. xxxx

...it's OK Henry, your T'shirt will be on sale in September xxx

...Henry doesn't care so long as I don't wake him up!
